Lucrative Careers

September 22nd, 2008

The medical field remains as one of the most lucrative industries of late. Most of our friends who finished degrees in nursing, physical therapy or medicine have moved abroad to pursue high-paying jobs and they are now living comfortably.

One of them who went to an xray technician school and eventually migrated to Canada after graduation is now leading a team of x-ray technicians in a popular hospital in the city. He worked his way from the ground up and has proved that perseverance and patience do bear fruit.

This is why many people are interested to shift to the medical field to widen their career options. Careereducation.net is a good start in finding the right educational programs. However, I believe that jobs in the medical field require so much passion and dedication that it is unfair to join the industry when the motivation is purely money. I wonder though how many people nowadays still believe in this thought.

My Project Runway

September 22nd, 2008

In my good stuff blog, which I started to actively update again a few weeks ago, I have changed the theme into a sort-of-fashion and shopping journal. I admit that I am a bargain shopper and I’m not a shopaholic but that shouldn’t stop me from making changes in my wardrobe choices.

I heard someone say before that a good way for me to learn a bit about fashion is to train my eyes in looking at beautiful things, or clothes for that matter. That’s why I started to read fashion articles, the ones that suit my simple taste. I also snag (or clip) photos of the clothing articles that I would like to have.

Will I make it good as a fashion consultant someday? Maybe not. But if I want to make it a serious career option, I would likely check out fashion education websites to start learning about the trends, what’s in and what’s not. There are lots of careers in the fashion industry to choose from. I believe that fashion is a very interesting and highly rewarding profession.

Something’s Cooking

September 22nd, 2008

My photography classes will conclude soon and I’ve started to think of other things I could sink my teeth into. Apart from taking additional workshops, likely in the area of photo enhancements or people photography, I’m also seriously considering enrolling for short cooking lessons.

My family loves to eat and with that it follows that we enjoy home cooked meals so much. And what better way to nurture my inclination to cook but to get trained in a good culinary school. Culinary schools in the US have exciting opportunities for learning and potential careers in the field.

I may not be keen to pursue it as a career but peeking at the online guide for culinary arts schools and training does spark my interest to learn the skill. The scope of this guide is pretty extensive as it covers the major states and it highlights known culinary schools in the US. Cooking just like photography is a craft that can be honed with enough patience, devotion and a big doze of passion. I wonder where my inclination for cooking will lead me.

Fancy Favicons?

September 22nd, 2008

Since I saw a really cute flower favicon in a blog, I wanted one too for all of my active blogs.  I realized how ‘dry’ and boring a URL address look without those cute favicons.  And what tool do I use to create them?

Creating one is just a breeze.  Try it!

The New Word on the Street

September 21st, 2008

Since I started my health and food blog, I got into the habit of reading related articles on the paper and on the Internet. Then I read about the brand called Orovo, which carries a line of “super” foods, weight loss and skin care pills.  It is fast becoming the new word on the street. But, does Orovo work? Well, reading through the Testimonials on the company’s website gives me an idea how popular and effective their product lines are. Check the site out to know more.

Back Online

September 21st, 2008

I almost lost my temper last week when I dealt with the customer service people of our current ISP. We lost our internet connection for four days and no one could pinpoint the problem that long.

I fully understand how technical support works, with my experience dealing with my SAP (an IT software) end-users before. So, what was irritating (to say the least) was the incompetence displayed by two of their support people who gave us every bit of misleading information related to our issue.

My husband took time-off to bring what was to be a “faulty” modem complete with the adaptor, splitter and Cat5e patch cable for repair. He spent a good deal of time at their office only to find out later on (with my help to troubleshoot) that the problem is with our phone line and not the modem.

It was emotionally exhausting. I am just delighted to know that the phone company obliged to fix the fault in less than 24 hours.

The Fab Four

September 21st, 2008

Last weekend, my husband and I bought our little girl two Wiggles DVD at the mall.  As expected, one of the DVDs, the one with Nursery Rhymes is a big hit!  She watched it from end to finish the first time and to this day, whenever we put it on, she will pull her big pillow on the playmat and comfortably watch it there.

She started memorizing bits and pieces of the lyrics, too.  We are surprised to hear her sing the words while attentively watching the video.

It’s just too bad that we won’t be able to bring her to the Wiggles concert this year.  Sydney’s schedule is almost always in December and this year we will fly back home to celebrate the holidays.  My daughter is officially a big fan of the Fab Four!

Healthy Lifestyle Change

September 20th, 2008

We started to feel more health conscious this year. Vegetables and fish are often in our weekly menu. We seldom use powdered flavorings on our meals. We avoid buying soda and buy natural juices instead. Fruits are aplenty here and a good serving of freshly cut rock melon, banana or custard apple a day will help in natural Body detoxification.

Also, there are products that help to cleanse our bodies from toxins, which filter specific organs in the body. It should be taken following a program that will help achieve a new healthy lifestyle. This day and age, when genetically modified foods, fast foods or TV dinners are available, it is worth our while to step back and think of the repercussions of not eating and living healthy.

It’s Still the Same

September 20th, 2008

I still can’t export what’s left of the almost 500 entries I have in my personal blog. I tried to back-up my SQL, delete and re-install it but it just won’t work. I scoured the wordpress.org forum for answers but there’s none.

3 out of my 6 blogs have this XML export problem. Now I have no idea what to do. There should be something out there that can be tweaked. I’m hoping that it’s a bug related to my Wordpress install. When I get a chance next time, I will try to rebuild everything from scratch and see if it will work.

Comfort First

September 20th, 2008

Did you know that there are specialized socks used to provide comfort for specific illnesses? Diabetic socks are a common form of distinctive footwear designed to protect against bacteria and fight odors caused by perspiration. I may not know someone who has used or is using this type of socks but for sure this unique creation is helpful to a lot of diabetic sufferers. Alleviating them from the state of discomfort and pain is as important as curing the illness. Truly, this is science and technology at its best. Go visit dhphomedelivery.com to know more about pricing and product details.

An Early Summer?

September 20th, 2008

Last week surprised us with very warm weather reaching 24 degrees at the earlier part.  Although this is a welcome change from wearing jackets and long pants, most of us we’re affected by the sudden up-shoot of the temperature. Leaving our friends with cough and colds.

It is only Spring time and we’re already feeling the heat of Summer.  But I hope the threat of a 40 degC during last year’s Summer will not happen again.  Right now, we’re making plans to hit the beach.

Anybody Home?

September 20th, 2008

Now that we’re living much farther from our families and friends back home, it has become a challenge to maintain constant communication. The costs of overseas calls can be a real drag and being in different time zones doesn’t help. Yes there are free Internet calls available but it’s different when you can speak with your loved one anytime, anywhere you want.

So good thing there are international phone cards! With low calling rates, fixed time limit and because it’s prepaid make it an ideal solution to homesickness.  Calling from the US to anywhere in the world is made affordable by getmecallingcards.com.  The rates of calls to Sydney are really cheap!

Error in WP XML Export

September 19th, 2008

I’ve been trying to download my WP file from my self-hosted blog and got this error:

The first few Google search results I got didn’t help at all.  I badly need to copy over the files to complete the blog changes I want to do.  Help please, WP gurus!

Avoiding the Christmas Rush

September 19th, 2008

Our Christmas gifts shopping officially started this week. I’ve crossed out about five names on our list and it’s still a long way to go! We’re still thinking of gift ideas for the kids so we can purchase them this weekend. Anyway for them, the choice is either toys or games.

Interestingly, shopwiki.com is a good website to get gift ideas. There are categories set for gifts for boys and girls. Since my list has a good balance of kids and adults, I may have to look-up this site to check gift items and prices.  I noticed that there are a lot of Nintendo gadgets in there. If only they come cheap.

My goal is to complete our Christmas shopping duties by October. Because we have weekend trips planned in November, I’m left with just five weekends to finish my shopping tasks.

Breaking the Routine

September 19th, 2008

Being a stay-at-home mom is not an easy-peasy role. Work is 24/7, there are no benefits, salaries or bonuses, you can’t hire a “temp” to cover your role when you get sick and there is no sickness or vacation leaves.

That’s why in the evenings, when my husband and I would have our conversations while sipping tea, we’d dream of our vacations to the Caribbean Islands! A week spent in Barbados villa rentals can de-stress and give any one that much deserve rest and recreation.

Discom-Google What?

September 19th, 2008

I confess. I get stressed out when I don’t have access to the Internet. Except when I’m on vacation, I feel that checking my blogs and emails are part of my daily routine.

Funny how new words are introduced when Google became popular. There’s Google-ing (which means searching/search on the Net) and now Discomgoogolation (coined from Discombulate – to confuse or frustrate and Google).  I think I’m showing signs of this Internet obsession disorder.

Now Is the Time

September 18th, 2008

Since we had our daughter, my husband and I realized how important it is to get health insurance. It is equally imperative to get coverage from a reputable company, one that has solid background in individual or group health insurance.

No matter how we try to keep a healthy lifestyle, to eat right and be active, we’ll never know when sickness will hit us. We’ve heard one too many stories about personal savings and funds being used to cover medical expenses, leaving loved ones behind to bear with the financial burden. The sound of health premiums may scare us at first, but it is only when we understand the coverage and benefits of insurance that we come to appreciate its value.

Kaiser Health Insurance believes in quality medical insurance cover at affordable prices. In fact, their website offers a free quote for those interested to know the plans offered and its corresponding prices. Be assured that this company has been in the health maintenance business for so long that it has become a household name.

If you don’t have a health insurance plan yet, go visit their website and found out which coverage suits you. Don’t wait any further, now is the time.

A Brand New Manfrotto

September 18th, 2008

Last Saturday, we went to visit Ted’s in Chatswood and I bought my tripod there. I ended up with a Manfrotto brand, which was on sale. The one I had planned to get, the one with ‘clips’ and not ‘screw’ to pull out the legs, is priced 100AUD higher than the one I got.

I think I made a good buy since I prefer to handhold my camera for most of my shots. There’s something about tripods that make me feel uncomfortable when taking photos. Or maybe I just need to get used to it. Nevertheless, I’m glad I got that tip to visit Ted’s, otherwise, I would’ve gotten a more expensive tripod which I don’t really need.

Seek and You Shall Find

September 18th, 2008

Although I’m subscribed to a few job search directories, I still surf the Internet for possible job opportunities. Not that I’ve started sending my resumes already but I am keen to know how the job market is doing relative to the industry I belong to.

A website called Fresho.com is a good reference point for jobs in the US. The industries covered range from Accounting, Healthcare to Insurance. There are also a lot of jobs in pharmaceuticals available. It helps that the job offerings is kept up to date and that the selection fields on the main page are pretty straightforward, requiring the applicant to key in the preferred area and job type.

Advertisers will also find it easy to post jobs as it doesn’t require registration and the rules for managing posts are pretty straightforward. Best of all, this service is free of charge. The same way that job seekers will find it easy to post resume with quick links to resume banks.

An available tool within the search page will allow applicants to search by location just by selecting the state or area within the map. Truly, job search has never been made this easy. Thanks to Fresho.com for this user-friendly job website.

Thank You, YouTube!

September 18th, 2008

My daughter is now becoming “addicted” to the Internet. I know, I know my husband and I talked about it and we’re figuring out alternatives for her. She easily gets bored with her toys, DVDs and books and turns to the laptop to watch her favorite clips on YouTube.

I’m thankful that winter is almost over (well, technically it’s already spring here but it’s still a bit cold) and we can go to the park more frequently now. But thanks to youTube and the users who uploaded Hi-5, the Wiggles and Sesame Street clips. My daughter loves them all!
